Authentic Indian Cuisine at FamilyMart! Introducing the New “South Indian-Style Shrimp Curry” Supervised by the Famous Restaurant “Khachar Bachar”

Japan’s FamilyMart is once again launching a new product that will impress gourmet fans. Starting Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the “South Indian-Style Shrimp Curry,” a pouched curry supervised for the first time by the popular Tokyo Indian restaurant “Khachar Bachar” (also featured in famous gourmet guides), will be available at stores across Japan.

An Authentic Curry that Recreates the Taste of a Famous Restaurant at Home

In recent years, the diversification of curry in Japanese food culture has been remarkable. While European-style curry and rich, creamy North Indian-style curries were once the mainstream, a wider variety of Asian curries, such as Thai and Sri Lankan curry, now delight people’s palates.

Against this backdrop, FamilyMart is offering a new curry experience. This time, they have teamed up with “Khachar Bachar,” a restaurant located in Shin-Otsuka, Tokyo. True to its name, which means “hodgepodge” in Hindi, the restaurant is known for its creative approach, adding Chinese Sichuan peppercorns (huājiāo), Thai fish sauce (nam pla), and even Japanese seasonings like soy sauce and miso as secret ingredients to traditional Indian cooking methods.

This is the third collaboration between FamilyMart and “Khachar Bachar.” Both the “Butter Chicken Curry” in 2023 and the “Two-Spice Curry” in 2024 were well-received.

What is South Indian Curry?

The new release is a South Indian-style curry. Generally, South Indian curries are less oily than their Northern counterparts and are characterized by the use of spices that enhance the natural flavors of the ingredients. Many feature the creaminess of coconut milk and the acidity of tomatoes, and since rice is the staple food in many parts of the region, they pair exceptionally well with Japanese white rice.

This “South Indian-Style Shrimp Curry” is a dish that truly encapsulates the charm of South Indian curry.

Built on a creamy, sweet coconut base, aromatic spices centered around coriander stimulate the appetite. The refreshing acidity of tomatoes tightens the overall flavor, and you can enjoy the umami and plump texture of the shrimp included as an ingredient. Furthermore, the addition of garlic and ginger creates a flavor that you won’t tire of until the very last bite.

“It’s a well-balanced finish of coconut and spices, perfect for the cold season. Please give it a try,” comments owner Shuji Tamura.

Priced at 417 yen (450 yen including tax), it will be available from Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at approximately 16,400 FamilyMart stores across Japan. The ability to easily enjoy the authentic taste of a famous specialty restaurant just by heating it in the microwave is a unique appeal of Japanese Konbini.

“Famimaru” consists of several lines, such as “Famimaru KITCHEN” for side dishes and bento boxes, “Famimaru Bakery” for bread, and “Famimaru Sweets” for desserts, all of which enrich the daily dining table. This “South Indian-Style Shrimp Curry” is another meticulously crafted product that meets the high-quality standards of the “Famimaru” brand.

When you visit Japan, why not stop by your nearest FamilyMart and try this authentic pouched curry? It will be an excellent opportunity to experience not only how “convenient” Japanese Konbini are, but also how “delicious” and “high-quality” they can be.
