Limited-edition postcards featuring popular Sanrio cat characters have gone on sale at 7-Eleven stores (Japan’s leading “Konbini” or convenience stores) nationwide. This is a special campaign commemorating Japan’s “Cat Day” on February 22.
What is Japan’s “Cat Day”?
In Japan, February 22 is celebrated as “Cat Day” (Neko no Hi). This is because the numbers “222” can be read as “nyan-nyan-nyan,” which sounds similar to the Japanese onomatopoeia for a cat’s meow. During this time of year, many Japanese convenience stores and shops launch cat-themed products and events.
Introducing the 4 Sanrio Cat Characters for 2026
Four groups of characters modeled after cats were specially selected from the Sanrio lineup for these limited-edition postcards.
- Charmmy Kitty A Persian cat character given to Hello Kitty by her papa. She is known for her pink lace-trimmed ribbon and the jewel necklace that holds Kitty’s treasure.
- Chococat Named for his chocolate-colored nose, Chococat is a curious black cat who picks up the latest info with his antenna-like whiskers.
- Marshmallow-styled fluffy kittens (Mashumaro-mitaina Fuwafuwa Nyanko) As the name suggests, these kittens are characterized by their white, fluffy appearance that looks just like marshmallows. Their soft, gentle art style is incredibly soothing.
- Nyani-nyu-nye-nyon A set of five energetic quintuplet kittens. The postcards capture their lively and adorable personalities, such as the reliable “Nya” and the spoiled “Nyu.”
