FamilyMart, a major “Konbini” (Japanese convenience store) chain with approximately 16,400 stores nationwide, is set to release a special new dessert. The “Chilled Melt-in-the-Mouth Cream Bun: Izumo Matcha,” crafted by the long-established Hiroshima bakery Hattendo, will be available starting Tuesday, April 28, 2026. This popular series, which highlights regional Japanese ingredients and seasonal flavors, is now entering its fourth year. This year’s version features an increased amount of matcha cream for an even deeper flavor, making it a must-try for any matcha enthusiast.

Matcha Cream Bun Package

A 4th-Year Evolution! Limited Edition Cream Bun Generously Using “Izumo Matcha” from Shimane

“Izumo Matcha,” produced in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, is an exceptionally rare variety of matcha (powdered green tea) with very limited production. This new release uses this precious ingredient generously. Inside the moist, soft bun, you’ll find two distinct layers: a fragrant matcha cream and a rich, concentrated matcha sauce at the center.

The structure is designed so that the matcha flavor evolves with every bite, allowing you to enjoy the full charm of Izumo Matcha from start to finish. Notably, the amount of matcha in the outer cream has been increased this year. You can expect a much stronger tea profile compared to last year’s version.

A Rich, Two-Layered Flavor! Deeper Taste with Increased Matcha Cream

The highlight of this year’s renewal is the increased ratio of matcha cream. By using the rare Izumo Matcha even more lavishly, the aroma that fills your mouth the moment you take a bite has been significantly enhanced.

The rich matcha sauce in the center has a different texture and a deeper bitterness compared to the cream, serving as an accent that ties the whole flavor together. Combined with the “melting” texture of the dough—made using Hattendo’s unique methods—the two layers create a satisfying experience similar to eating a high-end dessert. The vibrant green color of the matcha is also visually stunning, making it the perfect accompaniment for afternoon tea.

The Vision of “Sweets Bread” Born from a Tradition Founded in 1933

Hattendo's Founder Concept

Hattendo began its journey in 1933 (Showa 8) as a traditional Japanese confectionery shop in Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Over time, it evolved into a bakery and now shares innovative products like the “Chilled Cream Bun” with the world. Staying true to the founding philosophy of “cheering people up with something sweet,” they established the unique category of “Sweets Bread,” a fusion of bread and dessert.

This FamilyMart exclusive product was born from Hattendo’s passion and their desire to showcase regional Japanese ingredients. The fact that anyone in Japan can enjoy the taste of rare Izumo Matcha is thanks to the accessibility of the local “Konbini.” This new creation, which balances the bitterness and sweetness of matcha through Hattendo’s delicate techniques, is perfect for a small daily luxury.

If you are interested, look for it in the chilled dessert section of FamilyMart stores across Japan. As it is a limited-quantity release, we recommend purchasing it early!
