This traditional Japanese koppepan (sub-style roll) is made with fresh cream kneaded into the dough, resulting in a pale, high-moisture, soft, and chewy texture. While it looks like an American hot dog bun, the texture is much moister. It is filled with two layers: a rich, egg-based custard and a light whipped milk cream. A classic staple of Japanese bakeries, it can be enjoyed either chilled or at room temperature. Although it easily loses its shape and is not suited for long-distance carrying, it is highly enjoyed as a hotel breakfast or a teatime snack.
